Sweeping is a common maintenance activity, often done primarily for aesthetic reasons but if performed regularly, it really provides environmental benefits as well. Sweeping can reduce pollutants in water runoff and should be done to prevent sediment from washing into drains and gullies causing drainage problems.

Sweeping is most effective for removing coarse particles, leaves and trash. At a minimum, pavement should be swept twice yearly: in early spring to capture sediment before it is washed away by spring rains and again in the fall to capture pine needles, leaves and other debris.
